Media must help fight terrorism with truth — Oluyede

The Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, has urged Nigerian journalists to prioritise factual, balanced and conflict-sensitive reporting, warning that responsible journalism is critical to national security and democratic stability.

Oluyede made the call on Tuesday through the Director of Defence Information at the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), Samaila Uba, while speaking at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council Press Week lecture and awards ceremony in Abuja.

He said accurate and ethical reporting plays a crucial role in weakening the influence of terrorists, bandits, and other criminal groups by denying them what he described as “oxygen” for their operations.

“The media remains a critical pillar of our democracy and a vital instrument for national cohesion, public enlightenment, and accountability,” he said.

Oluyede stressed that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain committed to safeguarding lives and property, noting that the military and the media must continue to work as strategic partners in the collective effort to secure the country.

According to him, while the military is responsible for securing the physical space, the media shapes the information space, which in turn influences public perception, morale, and even operational outcomes.

“When reporting is factual, balanced, and conflict-sensitive, it denies oxygen to terrorism, banditry, and disinformation. It builds trust between the armed forces and the people we serve,” he stated.

He urged journalists to always verify information before publication and to balance speed with accuracy, especially in the digital age where information spreads rapidly across social media platforms.

Oluyede also called on the media to highlight the sacrifices of Nigerian troops and support national unity through responsible reportage.

On her part, Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Grace Ike, said the Press Week offers journalists an opportunity to reflect on the state of the profession and recommit to ethical standards.

She warned that as the 2027 general elections approach, the media must remain vigilant against misinformation, fake news, and propaganda aimed at distorting public opinion.

“The media has a sacred duty to protect truth, defend accountability, and preserve the integrity of the nation’s democratic process,” she said.

The event formed part of activities marking the 2026 NUJ FCT Press Week, which also included lectures, awards, and stakeholder engagements focused on media responsibility and democratic governance.
