Gombe federal lawmaker Yaya Tongo dies in Abuja hospital
The member representing Kwami/Funakaye/Gombe Federal Constituency of Gombe State in the House of Representatives, Yaya Tongo, is dead.
Tongo, who was elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2023, reportedly defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in March 2026.
His death was announced on Friday by former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, in a post on X.
According to Pantami, the lawmaker died on Friday at Nizamiye Hospital in Abuja, where he had been receiving treatment.
The former minister disclosed that he visited Tongo earlier in the day alongside some associates and met members of his family at the hospital.
Pantami said he became deeply concerned after seeing the lawmaker’s condition, describing it as critical, before later receiving news of his passing.
He prayed for the deceased and asked God to grant him eternal rest and give his family the strength to bear the loss.
As of the time of filing this report, the leadership of the House of Representatives had not issued an official statement on Tongo’s death.
