Fire scare at Senate wing of National Assembly as lawmakers contain outbreak in hearing room
A potential fire disaster was averted on Tuesday at the Senate wing of the National Assembly in Abuja following the swift intervention of lawmakers and staff who quickly contained a fire outbreak before it could spread.
The incident occurred in the kitchen compartment of Hearing Room 107 shortly after the Senate Committee on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) concluded the screening of Dr. Zainab Marwa, nominee representing the North-East on the commission’s board.
The committee, chaired by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, had just wrapped up the exercise when smoke was reportedly seen billowing from the kitchen area, causing brief panic among lawmakers and staff present.
Sources said the situation was brought under control within minutes, preventing what could have escalated into a more serious incident within the Senate wing.
The prompt response by those present ensured that normal activities resumed shortly after the scare, with no casualties or major damage recorded.
