The Federal Road Safety Corps has commenced nationwide special patrol operations ahead of the 2026 Eid-El-Kabir celebrations, deploying more than 30,000 personnel, including Regular and Special Marshals, to ensure safer highways and hitch-free movement across the country.

According to the Corps, the special operations, which began on May 25 and will run through May 31, 2026, are aimed at reducing road crashes, fatalities, traffic congestion and other highway emergencies usually associated with increased vehicular movement during the Sallah period.

The FRSC said the operations would focus on guaranteeing free flow of traffic, effective management of identified black spots and flashpoints, prompt rescue services, quick clearance of obstructions and strict enforcement of traffic laws on major highways nationwide.

To support the exercise, the Corps said it had mobilised operational equipment and logistics, including patrol vehicles, ambulances, tow trucks, motorcycles, radar guns, breathalysers and other traffic control facilities to strategic locations across the federation.

The Corps also directed all Zonal Commanding Officers, Sector Commanders and Unit Commanders to sustain aggressive visibility patrols and ensure full coverage of critical corridors throughout the operation.

Areas of enforcement during the patrol include excessive speeding, dangerous driving, wrongful overtaking, overloading, lane indiscipline, use of phones while driving, operation of mechanically deficient vehicles, expired tyres and passenger manifest violations.

The FRSC further disclosed that mobile courts would be in operation nationwide for speedy prosecution of traffic offenders, while emergency rescue teams have been placed on maximum alert to respond swiftly to distress situations.

The patrol operations will run on a shift basis to ensure 24-hour monitoring of major highways, with night rescue teams also positioned at designated operational commands across the country.

Major routes earmarked for intensive patrol and traffic management include the Abuja–Kaduna–Kano corridor, Akwanga–Lafia–Makurdi route, Kaduna–Saminaka–Jos highway, Ibadan–Ogere–Sagamu road, Sagamu–Mowe–Lagos expressway, Makurdi–Otukpo–9th Mile corridor, Asaba–Abraka–Ughelli–Warri axis and the Okene–Ogori–Owo route, among others.

The Corps said it would continue collaborating with the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, military formations and emergency medical service providers to strengthen traffic management and emergency response during the festive season.

The FRSC urged motorists to avoid excessive speed, dangerous overtaking, drunk driving, overloading and night travel, while encouraging road users to cooperate with officials deployed on highways.

Motorists were also advised to use the FRSC toll-free emergency number 122 and National Traffic Radio 107.1FM to report crashes, obstructions and other emergencies.

The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, reassured Nigerians of the agency’s readiness to ensure safer roads and wished Muslim faithful a peaceful and crash-free Eid-El-Kabir celebration.
