The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council has honoured Mr. Philip Nyam, Director General of the One Voice, New Era Campaign Organisation and National Assembly Correspondent of New Telegraph Newspapers, with the Award of Excellence in Legislative Reporting.

Nyam received the award during the 2026 NUJ FCT Press Week Lecture and Awards Ceremony held at the Transcorp Hilton Abuja.

The award recognised his outstanding contributions to legislative journalism, particularly his in-depth, exclusive, and analytical coverage of the National Assembly over the years.

The NUJ FCT Council said the recognition was in honour of Nyam’s commitment to accurate, balanced, and impactful parliamentary reporting that has helped simplify legislative processes for ordinary Nigerians.

Nyam, popularly known among colleagues as “Prof,” is a former Chairman of the House of Representatives Press Corps and the FCT Correspondents’ Chapel.

Beyond his journalism career, he also served as Director General of the “One Voice, New Era” Campaign Organisation, the movement that mobilised support for the emergence of Comrade Grace Ike as the first female Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council.

Presenting the award, NUJ FCT Chairman, Grace Ike, described Nyam as a seasoned journalist, strategist, and bridge-builder whose contributions to the union and legislative reporting remain significant.

“He doesn’t just report what happens in the chamber. He explains why it matters, who it affects, and what comes next,” she said.

She added that his work had continued to set standards for professionalism, depth, and courage in legislative journalism.

Responding after receiving the award, Nyam dedicated the recognition to members of the One Voice, New Era Campaign Organisation and journalists committed to accountability reporting.

“Legislative reporting is about understanding, not just access. If we get it right, democracy works better,” he stated.

He also appreciated the NUJ FCT leadership for the honour and commended Grace Ike for what he described as transformational leadership within the council.

“I want to commend the Chairman of NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, and her team for recognising and honouring me with this award. I’m excited and proud of the excellent work she is doing for the union,” he said.

Nyam further praised the NUJ FCT chairman for prioritising journalists’ welfare, uniting members, and driving reforms within the council.

He urged journalists in the FCT to continue supporting the “One Voice, New Era” administration in order to further strengthen the union.
