FG, China, NUJ urge Nigerians to learn Chinese for global opportunities

The People’s Republic of China, the Federal Government of Nigeria, and the Nigeria Union of Journalists have called on Nigerians to embrace the Chinese language, describing it as a strategic tool for global engagement, economic advancement, and cultural exchange.

The appeal was made during the International Chinese Language Day held in Abuja on Monday.

Speaking at the event, Cultural Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy and Director of the China Cultural Centre in Nigeria, Yang Jianxing, highlighted the growing global relevance of the Chinese language, noting its role in connecting people, cultures, and economies.

He described the language as a “genetic link” that embodies over 5,000 years of Chinese civilisation, adding that it serves as a shared heritage of humanity. According to him, Chinese is not only a “gift across time” but also a “golden bridge” that fosters mutual understanding and unity among nations.

Yang revealed that Chinese language education has witnessed significant global expansion, with over 190 countries and regions offering programmes, and more than 200 million people currently learning the language worldwide. He added that key Chinese philosophical values—such as collective responsibility and mutual respect—align closely with Nigerian cultural ideals of harmony and communal living.

He stressed that learning Chinese presents Nigerians with broader opportunities to understand China better and actively participate in bilateral cooperation across various sectors.

“Learning Chinese is undoubtedly an important shortcut to fully understanding China and achieving one’s aspirations through international cooperation,” he said.

Also speaking, the Director-General of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, represented by Director of News, Suleiman Musa, described the Chinese language as one of the world’s most enduring cultural assets.

He underscored the increasing role of language in diplomacy, trade, media collaboration, and global communication. Musa noted that the “Ni Hao China” programme emerged from agreements reached during the state visit of Bola Ahmed Tinubu to China in September 2024, aimed at strengthening trade, tourism, and bilateral relations.

He added that the language continues to open new pathways for storytelling, knowledge exchange, and international partnerships.

In her remarks, Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Grace Ike, emphasised the importance of language in promoting unity and mutual understanding among nations.

She said the event reflects the strengthening ties between Nigeria and China, driven by shared aspirations for progress, innovation, and prosperity.

“This event highlights the power of language as a bridge between cultures, deepening understanding between Nigeria and China—two nations united by common goals,” she said.
