The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has invited former Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, to deliver the keynote address at its 2026 Press Week scheduled to hold in Abuja.

The invitation was contained in a letter jointly signed by the Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, and Chairman of the Planning Committee, Obas Edesa.

According to the letter dated April 20, 2026, the event is billed for Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at the Lagos/Osun Hall of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.

This year’s theme is: “2027 Election: Defending Democracy in the Era of Disinformation.”

The union said Elumelu was selected based on his experience as a former federal lawmaker and his advocacy for democratic governance, noting that his perspectives would enrich discussions on the role of the media in safeguarding electoral integrity.

“As a distinguished former lawmaker, a defender of democratic values, and a respected voice for the people, your presence and insights will greatly enrich discussions on the critical role of the media in safeguarding democracy against the growing challenges of misinformation and disinformation in Nigeria’s electoral process,” the letter stated.

The NUJ FCT Council further explained that the keynote address would focus on strengthening democratic institutions, promoting credible elections, and addressing the rising threat of fake news ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The council expressed optimism that Elumelu would honour the invitation, noting that the Press Week is expected to bring together journalists, media executives, government officials, civil society organisations, and development partners from across the country.
