Cross River FGGC emerges second in National Girls in ICT competition
Cross River State has recorded a major national achievement after Federal Government Girls’ College (FGGC), Cross River, emerged second place at the Third National Girls in ICT Competition 2026, a contest that attracted over 3,700 participants from across the country.
The competition, organised by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy and held at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja, featured innovative digital solutions developed by young female students addressing challenges in agriculture, healthcare, education and accessibility.
While Special Education Centre, Bauchi, clinched the overall first position, FGGC Cross River came second, ahead of Resonance Science School, Abia, which placed third.
The result has been widely celebrated in Cross River State, with Governor Bassey Otu describing the performance as a strong affirmation of the state’s growing investment in education, innovation and digital skills development.
He said the achievement reflects the quality of mentorship and the untapped potential of young people in the state.
> “This outstanding achievement by the brilliant students of Federal Government Girls’ College, Cross River, is a moment of immense pride for our state,” the governor said.
“To rank among the top three out of over 3,700 participants is no small feat. It reflects discipline, creativity and hard work.”
Governor Otu added that the feat aligns with his administration’s vision of positioning Cross River as a hub for technological innovation and human capital development.
He also praised First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu for her encouragement of young girls in technology, noting that her message of confidence and curiosity would inspire more participation in STEM fields.
Similarly, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, was commended for driving national digital inclusion policies such as the 3 Million Technical Talent Programme and Project BRIDGE.
According to the governor, the performance of FGGC Cross River demonstrates that talent is evenly distributed across Nigeria, stressing that opportunity remains the key factor in unlocking it.
He further pledged continued investment in education, digital literacy, and youth empowerment to ensure that young people in the state remain competitive in emerging global technologies.
The competition ended with cash prizes, laptops, and mentorship packages awarded to finalists as part of efforts to groom the next generation of Nigerian tech innovators.
