World Cup hopes dampened as South Africa draws 1–1 with Czechia
Teboho Mokoena’s late penalty preserved South Africa’s hopes of reaching the FIFA World Cup knockout stages for the first time after Bafana Bafana battled to a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic in Atlanta.
The Czech Republic made the brighter start and took the lead after just five minutes when Michal Sadilek calmly finished following a well-worked move, putting his side on course for a crucial victory.
South Africa struggled to create clear-cut chances for much of the encounter, highlighting the attacking deficiencies that have troubled them throughout the tournament. However, Hugo Broos’ men refused to give up and continued searching for a breakthrough.
Their reward came seven minutes from time when Thapelo Maseko’s effort struck the arm of Pavel Sulc inside the penalty area. Referee Tori Penso pointed to the spot, and Mokoena confidently fired home to score South Africa’s first World Cup goal in 16 years.
Bafana Bafana nearly completed a dramatic comeback moments later, but Czech goalkeeper Matej Kovar produced a fine save to deny Relebohile Mofokeng.
The draw leaves both South Africa and the Czech Republic on one point in Group A, two points behind co-hosts Mexico and South Korea. With qualification still within reach, both nations are likely to need victory in their final group matches to secure a place in the last 32.
South Africa will face South Korea in a decisive encounter, while the Czech Republic take on co-hosts Mexico in what promises to be a difficult test.
