Obi, Dickson, Kwankwaso lead NDC marathon meetings over court judgment
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has concluded a series of emergency strategy meetings to chart a new course following the Federal High Court judgment that nullified its registration as a political party.
The marathon closed-door sessions brought together the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, National Leader Seriake Dickson, the National Working Committee and other key stakeholders to agree on immediate legal and political steps.
A senior party source disclosed that the meetings focused on preparing an appeal against the Lokoja Federal High Court ruling, with the case expected to be filed at the Court of Appeal on Monday.
National Secretary Ikenna Enekweizu confirmed the appeal would be filed immediately but declined to reveal the leader of the party’s legal team.
The court had set aside its December 2025 judgment that compelled the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the NDC, ruling that the decision affected the rights of the Peace Movement Party, which claims ownership of the logo adopted by the NDC.
Following the judgment, the party has also been denied access to INEC’s nomination portal, putting the submission of its 2027 candidates, including Peter Obi and his running mate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, under pressure.
Despite the setback, party leaders insisted the NDC remains united.
Kwankwaso said no temporary setback could weaken a movement built on hope, justice and equity, while National Chairman Moses Cleopas declared that the party was “stronger” despite the court ruling.
Seriake Dickson also dismissed speculation that party members were planning to defect, urging supporters to remain calm and focused while the legal process unfolds.
Sources further revealed that the NDC has activated a public relations campaign that will include engagements with civil society organisations, pressure groups and the media to defend the party’s position and strengthen public support in the coming days.
