The US Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected President Donald Trump’s effort to restrict birthright citizenship, preserving the constitutional right that grants American citizenship to nearly everyone born on US soil.

In a closely watched 6-3 ruling delivered on the final day of its current term, the court declined to back the proposed restrictions, ensuring that automatic citizenship by birth remains in place under existing constitutional protections.
