Council Election: PDP clinches 20 LGAs in Adamawa
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has secured victory in all 20 Local Government Areas of Adamawa State where results of the recently conducted council elections have been declared.
The election remains outstanding only in Numan Local Government Area, where voting is scheduled to take place following its postponement from the June 13 exercise conducted across the other councils in the state.
The outcome has drawn attention in political circles, particularly because Adamawa State is currently governed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) following Governor Ahmadu Fintiri’s defection from the PDP earlier this year.
Political observers, however, note that preparations for the local government election and the emergence of candidates had largely been concluded before the governor’s move to the APC on February 27, 2026.
Although many loyalists of the governor followed him into the APC, most of the council chairmanship candidates who had earlier secured PDP endorsements remained in the opposition party and proceeded to contest under its platform.
Several political parties participated in the election, but none was able to mount a significant challenge against the PDP across the 20 local government areas where results have been announced.
Reacting to the outcome, the PDP governorship candidate for the 2027 election in Adamawa State, Chief Maurice Vunobolki, congratulated the victorious chairmanship candidates, describing the result as evidence of the party’s enduring popularity among the electorate.
He said the victory demonstrated that the PDP continues to enjoy widespread support across communities in the state despite recent political realignments.
The election was conducted by the Adamawa State Independent Electoral Commission (ADSIEC), which has now shifted focus to the completion of the exercise in Numan Local Government Area.
Among those elected is Jibril Ibrahim Jimeta, who emerged chairman-elect of Yola North Local Government Area.
With the Numan poll still pending, the PDP is on course for a clean sweep of the local government elections if it secures victory in the remaining council.
